Located just minutes south of Daytona Beach, Port Orange is one of the fastest growing cities in what has become known as the “Fun Coast” area of Florida. Port Orange is known for its small town, family-focused feel, but also for its great location right in the heart of Florida’s east coast.
The history of Port Orange dates back to 1804 when Spain granted 995 acres to Patrick Dean. Prior to that time, the area was home to Timucuan and Seminole Indians. Dean built a large plantation along the Halifax River, but his entire community was destroyed by the Seminole Indians.
Following the Civil War, a second attempt was made to settle the area by an abolitionist named John Milton Hawks, who was looking to create a home for 500 freed slaves. The area came to be known as Freedmanville, but was officially named Orange Port by Hawks. In 1867, the name was changed to Port Orange, and the city was incorporated in 1926.
Today, Port Orange is home to an estimated 59,000 residents.
